Frequently Asked Questions

What does the term “orthodontics” actually mean?

Doctors who specialize in orthodontics (dentofacial orthopedics) look for and treat dental and facial abnormalities, such as misalignment, overcrowding, and undercrowding of teeth.

What does an orthodontist do?

Specialized treatment is needed for orthodontic issues. Dental and facial abnormalities should prompt patients to seek orthodontic treatment.

In order to become an orthodontist, a dentist must finish at least an extra two years of post-graduate orthodontic study at a recognized institution.
Corrective appliances designed, applied, and controlled by an orthodontist will realign teeth, lips, and jaws to create a harmonious facial balance.

At what age should my child first visit an orthodontist for a check-up?

As recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists, age 7 should be the latest age to visit an orthodontist. Early diagnosis of various orthodontic disorders is critical in order to avoid more difficult treatment in the future.

If I have braces or a retainer, how can I properly care for my teeth?

  • Always remember to clean and floss your teeth after each meal
  • Ask your orthodontist or dentist if you should use a fluoride rinse along with fluoride toothpaste to help prevent tooth decay
  • If you remove your retainer to eat, brush and floss your teeth and store the retainer safely in its case
  • Clean your retainer gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste, or soak it in a denture cleanser if recommended by your orthodontist. Avoid hot water or dishwashers
  • Limit sugary foods, which can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods such as gum, caramel, nuts, ice, and hard candies that can damage braces
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups, ideally every six months

Are dental checks still required every six months even if I wear braces?

Yes! Patients who are undergoing orthodontic treatment should see their dentist on a frequent basis. With braces, food may be trapped in areas that your toothbrush can’t access.

As a result of the bacteria that accumulate, it is possible for cavities, gingivitis, and other gum diseases to develop. Your dentist and orthodontist will work together to keep your teeth as clean as possible while you wear braces.

What’s the best way to book a new appointment?

Our office may be reached by phone at any time. If you have any questions about scheduling an appointment, please don’t hesitate to ask our receptionists. Please let us know whether you’re a new patient or were referred to our clinic so that we can provide you with all the details you require.

How can I tell if my child needs braces or not?

It is possible to have a variety of dental issues, even if the teeth appear to be straight. On the other hand, there are certain issues that appear daunting and difficult but are actually simple to handle.

We are the best source of information because orthodontics is our area of expertise. We’d be happy to meet with your child for an initial assessment and give you any advice that might be useful, for FREE.

What are the first signs of orthodontic issues?

It can be hard to tell if treatment is needed, but these signs may indicate your child should see an orthodontist:

  • Misaligned Teeth: Crooked, overlapping, or widely spaced teeth.
  • Bite Problems: Upper teeth covering more than 20% of lower teeth, or upper and lower teeth not lining up properly.
  • Jaw Misalignment: Jaw shifts to the side or appears uneven when biting down, indicating possible skeletal issues.

Early evaluation can help prevent more serious problems later.

Is there a benefit or a drawback to both extraction and non-extraction therapy?

Extraction therapy removes certain teeth to make space for proper alignment. Non-extraction therapy avoids removing permanent teeth by expanding the jaws or reshaping teeth to relieve crowding. After a thorough evaluation and review of diagnostic reports, Dr. Rodriguez will help determine the best option for your child.

Is the cost of orthodontic treatment high?

Orthodontics is a smart investment in long-term oral health. Early treatment can prevent more extensive dental work later, and costs have remained relatively stable. Many insurance plans cover orthodontics, and our office offers flexible payment options to fit your budget.

Do I need veneers if I do braces?

If you don’t like the shape and color of your teeth, you might need veneers at the end of orthodontic treatment, but it will be way more conservative.
